The Schevardino Redoubt

Introduction

5 September 1812 and the Russian army has ended it's long retreat and is confronting the French across the main road to Moscow. As the French arrive they assault the Russian's outlying redoubt at Schevardino. As the light begins to fail, the redoubt continues to hold out. Dumont and his men are detailed to support the attack on an adjoining hill to flank the Russian position.

Background

“Several voltigeur companies, ordered up by Compans on to a neighbouring mound only 120 yards away, direct a murderous fire into the redoubt. But though night is now falling neither side seems to be gaining the upper hand.”

(Austin 1993, p256)

Objective

The French objective is to gain control of the Russian deployment point on the hill, allowing them attack the flank of the Schevardino redoubt, which is to the north of the table.

Map

There is a low hill in the centre of the map with the Russian primary deployment point. To the northern side is the edge of the Schevardino redoubt under assault by the French (just off the map). The surrounding area is farmland and trees.
