When the players encounter Hugon of Drakeholt he will be distracted, inattentive, and acting quite oddly.

The jewel worn by Hugon is in fact the phylactery for the lich dragon Guthu, the evil leader of the dragons who led his kind to banishment many centuries ago. Guthu himself as he watched his dragon hordes banished to the Ethereal Plane he transformed into a lich, trapping his soul within the jewel now worn by Hugon. As the planes draw closer together, the soul trapped in the jewel has become more active, looking for a way to escape, and in the process slowly driving Hugon mad.

Hugon wears the jewel on a heavy chain around his neck, and will toy with it in a distracted way. He is becoming more and more distant from the real world, attending more to the influence of the dragon inside his own head.

Guthu is seeking an escape, a way to return and to reopen the gateway that will allow the dragons to return from the ethereal plane to this world where they can dominate the humans once more.
