Smolensk
Introduction
It is 17 August 1812 and the Grand Army has arrived in front of Smolensk. The French army assault the suburbs beyond the walls as the Russian defend themselves within the city. Dumont and his company have been ordered to support the flank of the Wurttemberg division as they assault the Russian position south of the walls.
Background
“On the skirmishers reaching the crest of the plateau we see them carry out a sudden flank movement at the double, in the direction of a large enclosed area visible at some distance to their right, and which seems to be a cemetery. One by one they get inside it and vanish. To make this movement they've had to pass in front of two long loopholed buildings, or timber outhouses, from which comes a lively fusillade…”
(Austin 1993, p190)
Objective
The French objective is the take the walled cemetery as a preliminary to a determined assault on the walls of the city.

Orders
France
Russia
The artillery will deploy on the glacis seeking to cover the approaches to the fortress. The Jager skirmishers will deploy to the graveyard and create an outer perimeter. The remaining Jager will deploy two half the company to the outer part of the cemetery seeking cover from the walls and trees, and the remaining half to the church itself. The musketeers will remain in reserve, and remain initially undeployed until the direction of the enemy threat is unclear.
